Senior Pastor Job Description:
The Senior Pastor, the spiritual leader of the church, is entrusted with the responsibility of communicating God’s Word, ministering to the spiritual needs of the congregation, and providing biblical leadership. Beyond these core duties, the Senior Pastor also plays a crucial role in pastoral care, supervising staff, and demonstrating administrative leadership in all aspects of the church. Ultimately, their mission is to guide the church in fulfilling its divine purpose.
Training and Experience:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity (or equivalent) is required; a master’s degree is preferred. Senior pastoral experience of at least 3-5 years, and prior experience serving in an urban ministry context is preferred.
Special Requirements:
Converted and called to the pastoral ministry.
Licensed and ordained as a minister in the Baptist Church.
Spiritual and personal integrity and maturity.
Family oriented.
Ability and willingness to share Christ and disciple others.
Positive human relations skills.
Obvious motivational skills.
Ability to communicate well through a pulpit ministry.
Proven love for fellowship with other local churches.
Ability to empathize with the deep concerns of the congregation.
Duties – Responsibilities:
To proclaim the gospel with the goal of reaching persons for Christ and fostering academic, emotional, social, and spiritual growth.
To love and affirm people and families within the fellowship without bias or prejudice.
To provide counseling as needed and to keep confidential such communication.
Provide leadership and vision for the church. Direct plans for ministry and church growth.
Motivate, equip, and nurture the people of the church through example, preaching and teaching God’s Word, and spiritual counseling.
To serve as chief administrator of church programs and ministries.
To facilitate communication with ministry leaders to ensure plans and goals are in line with the mission.
To develop relationships with officers of the church and associates ministers to promote Christian teamwork.
To develop a leadership evaluation plan incorporating training and development opportunities.
To be ex officio member of all boards directly affiliated with Salem Baptist Church.
To establish pastoral and administrative staff levels and positions conducive to implementing the mission of the church.
To give primary oversight and direct the church office, overseeing that the church calendar is maintained, representing the church to visitors and other people who might encounter the church, advising other church members of information they need to carry out their duties as church officers, and serving other reasonable activities relative to the church office.
To provide leadership and support in achieving the church’s budgetary goals.
To support women in ministry (i.e. women in the pulpit).
To establish church office hours and maintain those hours for the benefit of all church members and the related business of the church. In times of absence, the Chairperson of Deacons and church office should be informed as to how to contact the Senior Pastor.
To ensure the sick, elderly, and the bereaved are cared for and contact is maintained with the membership.
To be an encourager to people, programs, and ministries of the church family.
To be actively involved and supportive of local ministerial associations.
To be a leader in the community and represent the church in key community events, when needed.
Officiate at weddings and funerals.
Moderate all business meetings of the church, if possible..
Lead in observance of the ordinances of the church.
Cooperate with local, state, and denominational leaders in matters of mutual interest and concern; keep the church informed of denominational developments; represent the church in denominational and civic matters.
Stay up to date on current theological and ministry trends.
